Sharm el Sheikh: A Different Side to Egypt
There’s far more to Egypt than fusty museums and busy bazaars. Take Sharm el Sheikh – one of the most developed resort towns on the Sinai peninsula. Surrounded by mountains, Sharm is a vibrant resort that has rapidly developed over the past few years – and is now home to boutique hotels and large international hotels and clubs, not to mention all the amenities you’d expect from a major resort town, such as golf courses and casinos. But what Sharm el-Sheikh holidays are best known for are is the local diving spots, with over 250 reefs in the surrounding coast, home to over 1000 varieties of marine life.
Beyond the diving, you’ll find moonlit camel tours available, which see holidaymakers take in local historical sites before stopping for a barbeque. Nearby to Sharm is Na’ama Beach, home to the first hotel to have been built in the area, which is rapidly developing of its own accord, and almost all of the hotels have their own private beaches. Na’ama Beach is well known for its nightlife, with a variety of tempting bars, clubs and even sheesha cafes.
Sharm el Maya is the bay area of Sharm el Sheikh, a natural harbour with many relaxing fishing spots nearby – there are boats available for a nominal rental fee, and it’s one of the cheapest places in the world to pick up your diving license, with a number of diving instructors operating in the area. Sharm el Sheikh: it’s the unexpected face of Egypt.
