Travelling Around Egypt
If you’re going to Egypt on holiday this year, you’ve probably not give much thought to how you’ll travel around Egypt once you step off the plane. While your transportation from the airport to your hotel has probably been arranged by the airline, if you’re not part of a tour group you will find that you will have to arrange transportation for yourself. So if this sounds like the situation that you are going to be in on holiday, don’t panic, because here are some simple steps that take the hassle out of travelling around Egypt independently.
Take the Bus
Like buses back home, the bus services in Egypt can vary wildly in terms of time, space and comfort. The general rule is that if you want to travel quickly and comfortably then it’s best to go on a bus tour that runs between major cities and popular tourist destinations, as these are where the most luxurious and often air conditioned buses run.
Go By Train
The train service in Egypt is particularly good, and while the services are very punctual, it’s the trains themselves that are the reason travelling by train is so popular. Try to go for an air conditioned express train if you don’t want to get too hot, but if you’re not too fussy, then some of the older and more ordinary trains which don’t have air conditioning will get you from A to B without a fuss. If you’re wanting to travel to any of Egypt’s beach destinations such as Sharm el Sheikh, be aware that the trains do not yet service those routes.
By Car
Like in many holiday destinations, it’s very easy to hire a car and travel around Egypt at your own pace. The major car rental agencies such as Avis and Hertz are available in Egypt, but be aware that driving in Egypt is very different from driving at home, and many drivers don’t follow the highway code. If you really need to drive somewhere hail a taxi, but make sure that it is genuine.
